Welcome to the exciting and creative world of art right in your neighborhood of North Arlington! Several options for children and Adults.
I teach private lessons at my home in North Arlington, VA close to Nottingham Elementary School and Lee Harrison shopping center.
At my North Arlington home, the art lesson possibilities are endless. I’ve created a few suggested packages listed below to inspire children.
Why take a class with me?
- I have a Masters for Teaching Art from the Maryland Institute, College of Art.
- I’ve taught in public schools, at the Art League and privately for a combined 25 years of experience.
- I love art and I love working with children and adults who are interested in positive change.
Each class for children is 60 minutes and filled with meaningful content and creative art.
Art Pack Options for Children
Package 1 /Real people and faces
Understanding proportions and learning to measure without a ruler are the first steps to creating realistic drawings of people or a still life. The concept is simple, the practice takes time and patience but is very rewarding when the goal is realism. Shading may be introduced. Age recommendations: 5-9
Package 2 / Drawing from life
Drawing from life helps students establish critical thinking and observation skills. Both are needed to make art that represents the things we see around us. Plants, animals, people and still life drawings will be explored. This is a great way to get your child to connect with something other than the virtual world found on devices. Age recommendations: 7 and up
Package 3/ Picasso and Matisse: friendship and art
Every child should know about Picasso and Matisse and the art they created. Artists help shape our thinking by the chances they take and the way they stay open to possibilities. Drawing, painting and collage are explored. Age recommendations: 7 and up
Package 4/ Art is for making.
Based on the artists Kandinsky, Miro and Calder. This is a great option for the very young artist learning about line, shape, color and texture. It’s also great for older children who want to feel the freedom of learning fun techniques and skills without having to be judgmental about if it is anatomically “correct”. Age recommendations: 5 and up
Package 5. Girl’s just want to have fun (and make art): open to boys and girls. Traditional women artists like Cassatt created art around women and life of mothers and children. Creative fun begins as we learn about the polka dot art of contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. Georgia O’Keeffe reminds us to stick our nose into things and really explore. We will spend two classes on each artist. Age recommendations: 5 and up
Package 6: Let it flow creatively
This option is a “see as you go” option, allowing the instructor and student to get to know each other and share their interests, art ideas and create a plan that is not pre-prescribed. This is a good option for a student who has an idea for a direction such as wanting to draw more realistically or learn to paint abstract art on canvas.

The Grateful Artist is a class I offer to adults looking for a creative practice to uplift their spirits through art. Inspirational writing, words of wisdom are often part of this art. The purpose is to surround ourselves in the beauty that come from within us that we are meant to express as beings of creative love and light in the world. Even if you don’t feel that way, let art help with the transformation into a more bright creative you.
Watercolor techniques as well as other mixed media are used in class and all materials in the class are provided. Be prepared to work at home on your own art as you play with making art on a regular basis.
